South of 6th Business District Leads Community Mural Project in Iowa City’s South District

We at the South of 6th Business District are proud to lead a vibrant, community-driven mural project in collaboration with local residents and Faith Academy. This 4,400-square-foot mural, located on the back wall of Faith Academy on Broadway Street, reflects the spirit, culture, and creativity of our neighborhood.

“To put this mark here says this is our community, and this is where we want to be,” shared Shaquita Smith, a South District resident and mural participant.

Over 130 community members, including adults and children, have contributed to the painting process. Local artist Nick Meister designed the mural based on ideas from neighborhood children, focusing on animals, sports, and imagery that represents life in the South District.

“This is a 100% grassroots, resident-led project that will shine a positive light on our community,” said Angie Jordan, a lead organizer from the South of 6th Business District. “The mural is a testament to what we can achieve when we come together with purpose and creativity.”

Although the COVID-19 pandemic limited the initial plans for a large community event with music and food, the spirit of collaboration remained strong. Safety measures were implemented to ensure that participants could safely contribute to the mural while maintaining social distancing.

Faith Academy, which hosts the mural on its building, is enthusiastic about its role in the project. “We’re excited about how this mural will add to and reflect the community,” said Doug Fern, Head of School at Faith Academy.

For many, the mural holds deep personal significance. “When you’re consistent with your dreams, they come true,” said Smith, who painted alongside her children, Jaide and Jeremiah. Jaide expressed her excitement, saying, “When people see the mural, they’ll say, ‘It’s us, we did that.'”

This project embodies our mission at the South of 6th Business District: to foster a connected, creative, and thriving community where residents feel a sense of pride and belonging. We invite everyone to visit and experience this vibrant work of art—a true testament to the power of collaboration and community spirit.
