Early Bird Cafe Joins South of 6th Business District at South District Market
We at the South of 6th Business District are excited to welcome Early Bird Cafe, the latest addition to the South District Market located at 947 U.S. Highway 6. Owned by Rachael Scott and Tasha Lard, Early Bird Cafe officially opened its doors on Monday, bringing more delicious options to our growing community.
Rachael Scott, known for her mobile coffee truck Café on the Go, has long been dedicated to serving areas that lack coffee shops. With Early Bird Cafe, she continues that mission right here in the South District, using beans from Iowa City’s beloved Café del Sol.
“I don’t think people should have to travel for quality products,” Scott said. “I love coffee and think everyone should have the luxury of a local coffee shop in their neighborhood. It’s important to build something in this community.”
A Menu for Everyone
Early Bird Cafe offers a variety of beverages and food options, from energy drinks with coconut syrup to cold brew and drip coffee. Customers can also enjoy fresh salads like apple farro, wraps such as jerk chicken and chicken alfredo, and vegan-friendly items. The cafe’s food menu is curated in partnership with local chef Kisha Smith, whose dishes instantly captured Scott’s imagination.
Rooted in Community
Scott’s journey began in 2021 with Café on the Go, which first gained attention at events like the South District Diversity Market. While the mobile service will continue to focus on catering events, Early Bird Cafe now provides a permanent gathering spot in the heart of the district. Scott is enthusiastic about being part of the collaborative, family-like atmosphere at South District Market.
“We’re excited to be part of this community,” she said. “We invite everyone to stop by, check us out, and share your honest feedback. We hope to see everyone soon!”
Welcome, Early Bird Cafe—we’re thrilled to have you in the South of 6th Business District!
