Iowa Women’s Rowing Team Joins Local Cleanup Effort in Iowa City South District
The South to 6th Business District in Iowa City partnered with the Iowa Women’s Rowing Team for a community cleanup day this week. Approximately twenty student-athletes joined forces to clear litter in the Pepperwood Plaza area, collecting five bags of trash and helping to beautify the South District.
The effort was spearheaded by Maurice A. Davis, Executive Director of the South District Business Leaders, in collaboration with the rowing team, which has a history of participating in similar initiatives. According to Iowa Athletics, the team had previously assisted with a spring cleanup in the same neighborhood and sought to continue their involvement this fall as part of their commitment to community service.
Davis highlighted the significance of the cleanup in the district’s broader revitalization efforts. “The cleanup fits into the broader efforts to improve the overall public opinion of the South District and align our efforts with the City of Iowa City development plan,” he explained.
Beyond aesthetics, Davis emphasized the lasting impact such events can have on the community. “I hope that events like these will help to clean up the community and add to its pride,” he said.
Looking ahead, Davis shared plans to support future events in collaboration with the South District Neighborhood Association. These initiatives reflect a collective effort to foster a sense of pride and strengthen connections within the community.
The cleanup, held during the rowing team’s usual practice hours, reflects their commitment to balancing rigorous academic and athletic responsibilities with meaningful community engagement.
This event is one of several initiatives aimed at revitalizing the South District, with plans for similar collaborations in the future.
