South of Iowa City Adds Warmth, Visibility, and Momentum With GrantsFor Business Signage
Iowa City, IA — The South of Six Business District is celebrating the installation of two
new business signs marking an important milestone in its Signage Program and signaling
growing momentum for placemaking efforts across the south side of Iowa City.
Funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) via the City of Iowa City, the
Signage Program launched in November to help local businesses improve visibility,
strengthen identity, and create a more welcoming and connected district.
The first completed projects include new exterior signage for Dream City, located near
Kaikak, and updated signage and vinyl window graphics for Zoetic Coffee located in the
South District Market off Highway 6.
“These signs are about more than branding,” said Maurice A. Davis, Director of the South
of Six Business District. “They help people find places more easily, they soften our
buildings, and they make the neighborhood feel warmer and more inviting. That sense of
care and visibility plays a real role in helping people feel safe and welcome in their
community.”
Business owners say the improvements have already made a difference.
“We are incredibly grateful to be part of the sign program and to be located in a
district that values visibility, collaboration, and community pride. The new marquee
sign has already received such positive feedback, and it has strengthened how
people find us, connect with us, and understand the work happening inside Dream
City. This investment reflects a shared commitment to uplifting local organizations
and businesses, and we’re excited to continue growing alongside the district,” said
Dream City Executive Director Fredrick Newall.
“Being tucked away off the main drag, we knew that visibility was our biggest hurdle
before opening our doors in December. Thanks to the 50/50 match funding grant
from South of 6, we’ve been able to install signage on the Pepperwood Plaza
Monument Sign and a large vibrant window decal at the South District Market. We
needed to catch the community’s eye and invite them into our space and they
helped us do just that. The entire grant process was incredibly seamless; their team
maintained excellent communication from our first inquiry through the final
installation. We are so grateful for their support in helping our business and others
in our area literally stand out.” said Lisa Bishop, Owner of Zoetic Coffee.
Together, the new signs contribute to a more active and approachable streetscape, helping
residents and visitors alike feel more confident navigating the area while reinforcing a
sense of pride and place.
The South of Six Business District views the Signage Program as part of a broader
placemaking and community-safety strategy. By investing in visible, people-centered
improvements, the district aims to create an environment that feels cared for, vibrant, and
welcoming, supporting both existing businesses and future growth.
“These projects are just the beginning,” Davis added. “We’re working toward a district
where people want to spend time, businesses want to invest, and the community feels
connected. Signage is one tool among many we’re using to help make that vision real.”
Following the strong response to the first round of awards, the South of Six Business
District has officially launched Round Two of the Signage Program. Additional projects are
expected to move forward in the coming months, with a follow-up announcement planned
once new awards are finalized
